Legal Requirements

Wording

The Marriage Act specifies:

  • That I am required to identify myself by using the wording:

“My name is Tony Nolan, I am a Registered Marriage Celebrant, and I am authorized to solemnize this marriage, according to law.”

  • That I say, to you, the words:

“Before you (Full Legal Name), and you (Full Legal Name), are joined in marriage, in my presence and in the presence of these witnesses, I am to remind you of the solemn, serious and binding nature of the relationship into which you are now about to enter.
Marriage is, according to law in Australia, the union of a man and a woman, to the exclusion of all others, voluntarily entered into for life.”

  • That you include in your vows, the words:

(Groom) “I call upon all persons here present to witness that I, (First and last name or two given names), take you, (Names), to be my lawful wedded wife.
(Bride) I call upon all persons here present to witness that I, (Names), take you, (Names), to be my lawful wedded husband.”

Who Can be Involved

The marriage Act requires that the Celebrant

  1. Introduces themselves as above
  2. Says the word contained in the section, above, commencing “Before you (Name) and you…..” and ending with “……voluntarily entered into for life”
  3. Witnesses the saying of the vows in the form specified above.
  4. Signs the Register and Certificates.

Beyond this, anyone you choose may conduct the remainder of the ceremony.

Your Input

Beyond the above requirements, you may choose whatever you want. It is entirely up to you to decide what you want to include in your ceremony.

With the aid of my workbooks and selection of readings and symbolic acts you will find this easy to do and I am always available to help.
